Lucas Vineyards is 2 Time Best Riesling Winner

The Lucas 2009 Semi-Dry Riesling is a high quality wine at a great value according to wine judges across the nation who awarded it Best White Wine and Best Semi Sweet Riesling. In the Finger Lakes region where white wines and Rieslings rule, there is stiff competition at the Great New York State Fair Commercial Wine Competition. Out of approximately 400 wines judged, Lucas Vineyards was awarded June Phillips Best Riesling Award and Best White Wine for the 2009 Semi-Dry Riesling. Then again at the International Eastern Wine Competition the same wine was voted Best Semi Sweet Riesling and awarded a Double Gold Medal. This wine has also recently won Gold Medals at the Critics Challenge and Monterey International Wine Competitions in California along with Gold at the Finger Lakes International Wine Competition. Winemaker Jeff Houck describes the 2009 Semi-Dry Riesling as “a perfect balance between sweetness and acidity, with bright fruit coupled with some beautiful minerality.”

Lucas Vineyards is the oldest winery on Cayuga Lake, founded in 1980. The Rieslings mentioned are made from a combination of 3 Riesling vineyard sites; the oldest being 31 years old, and the youngest just 8 years old; all on the Lucas estate. This blending of terroir creates wines that are complex and elegant, yet bright and fresh.

The Lucas 2009 Dry Riesling also excited judges from coast to coast, winning a platinum award at the Critics Challenge. This international competition in California judges approximately 1,400 wines where only 16 white wines were selected to advance into the sweepstakes to receive the coveted platinum award. At the International Long Beach Grand Cru wine competition the 2009 Dry Riesling earned a Double Gold medal and a Chairman’s Best of Class. In addition, this wine secured gold at the Grand Harvest Wine Competition, considered to be one of the most competitive, giving a low percentage of medals compared to other competitions. What makes the Grand Harvest Competition unique is that wines are judged based on region and recognizes entries that best represent the terrior of those respective regions. The Dry Riesling was called “Classic Finger Lakes Dry Riesling,” by one of the judges.

The 2009 Lucas Dry and Semi-Dry Rieslings are collecting big awards while the 2010 Lucas Rieslings aren’t far behind. Just recently bottled, not yet released, both the 2010 Dry and Semi-Dry Rieslings won Gold at their first competition, the Critics Challenge International Wine Competition. This represents a great preview of what we can expect from the 2010 Lucas Rieslings.
Lucas Vineyards’ 2009 Dry and Semi-Dry Rieslings are available at the winery on the west side of Cayuga Lake and at local wine shops, where it sells for $13.99 a bottle.
